Honourary Doctor of Laws - Spring 2012
Graduating from the University of Saskatchewan in 1967 with a degree in mechanical engineering, Art Dumont did not take long to start making his mark on the oil and gas industry. By 1985, he had been appointed president and CEO of a multitude of companies. He retired as CEO of Technicoil in 2008.
Mr. Dumont is known in Alberta as one of the University of Saskatchewan's most influential fundraisers and ambassadors. He was chair of the Oilmen's Executive Association which brings together the senior executives of the Canadian and International oil and gas industry, both exploration/production and service/support sectors. He was co-chair for four terms of the selection committee for the Saskatchewan Oilmen's Hall of Fame which recognized individuals, born in Saskatchewan, who have made a significant contribution to the upstream oil and gas industry in Canada or internationally. His service to the University of Saskatchewan started in 1991 with the founding of the Calgary Engineer's fundraising group. Later he provided leadership on the two of the University's major fundraising campaigns: First and Best in the 1990s and Thinking the World of Our Future in the 2000s.
He was appointed to the University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors from 2003 to 2012, serving as board chair from 2006 to June 2010.
Mr. Dumont has been the recipient of many awards and distinctions for his professional and business achievements, culminating in his induction into the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Hall of Fame in 2011. The University of Calgary awarded him the Canadian Engineering Leadership Award, and in 2000 he became a member of the University of Saskatchewan College of Engineering Wall of Distinction. He is an active supporter of many charitable organizations and the arts in Alberta, Saskatchewan and internationally.
As a prominent member of the Calgary business community Mr. Dumont upholds the tradition that a University of Saskatchewan education means: generosity, integrity, honour, and business acumen. As a businessman and philanthropist, Dumont has made significant contributions to the Saskatchewan and Alberta communities. His business and community leadership, character, integrity, compassion and personal legacy qualify him on every level to receive the University of Saskatchewan's highest honour.
